Moremi Magic

We flew into Moremi Reserve this morning and checked in the Okuti Lodge which has some fantastic architecture. Set on a lagoon with large hard wood decks under the shady canopy of ebony trees the lodge is built out of wooden logs and iron skeleton covered by heavy canvas cloth set in a dome formation.  The structure is meant to reflect the new government parliament building that was constructed after Botswana’s independence.  I love the high domes which allow a great flow of air.  The staff welcomed us with traditional songs and dances.  I find that what really surprises people about Africa beyond the expected animal sighting is the wonderful warm hearted African people - quick with a smile, incredibly friendly, fun, with a belly roar laugh that just makes you happy to be in their presence.

The staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome and comfortable - it felt like coming home!  Our guide, Salin, took us out on a sunset boat ride among the hippos and water lilies to a surprise bush sundowner spot where the bar was set up and fresh gin and tonics, South African wines, and more awaited us.  After returning to the lodge we sat under the stars around the camp fire and used the Star Gazer app on my phone to look at all the amazing constellations.  Another special pleasure in Africa where there is no light pollution.
